IF you liked the TDF then a Zelos or a Virtouso is a similair bike with more gears 14 on the Zelos, 16 on the Virtuoso or a Triban 5 20 gears all well within your price range

Tribal 540 is great for the money new but you could pick up a great second hand bike for £600 - even a carbon bike.

As long as I breathe, I attack.
Higher spec gears will not make make you any faster , they will be a bit lighter and maybe a bit slicker and as it has more gears less jumps when you change gear .
The triban and boardmans both offer a lot of bang for your buck when compared price on price with the big name brands like trek etc .
105 is considered to be the sweet spot in terms of price and performance so if you can then go for it .

This is a good buy at £599 with shimano 105 (also available in black/white) or with SRAM Apex at £499!
It may be stretching your budget but Planet X also do a full carbon frame (pro carbon) with 105 for £799. 0% finance also available.

Are they ok bikes I have not heard of them b4

The planet x bikes are mighty fine bikes. I have a Kaffenback 2.

They are a bit like a wholesaler, they import frames (which they designed) and then sell direct to the public instead of via local bike shops so margins are lower and the price is cheaper.

Word of caution, you may want to visit their shops before ordering as mail ordering can be the wrong decision if it is the wrong fit.

They are very well regarded and excellent VFM.
How tall are you Dave?
What size is your Carrera?
Re sizing; If you are happy with the size of your current bike then compare Geometry charts for both and you won't go far wrong.
