Hey , can anyone recommend some thin, lightweight waterproof trousers that i can wear over my cycling shorts come the rainy season? which appears to be upon us already . Oh and not looking to spend big bucks, im a cheap n cheerful kind of chap

How far are you cycling and at what effort? any water proof trowsers I've had either aren't that waterproof or are boil in the bag or both. I think its the holy grail of cycling a cheap & breathable waterproof that actually works; I thought I'd found that with the Montane featherlite jacket and bought their trowsers, they are very thin and compress small (the size of an apple) and they are good for breath ability but aren't that good in anything more than a light shower. Other waterproof trowsers I've had have been more waterproof but the trade of is in price and breathability, if I was wearing cycling shorts I rather wear them alone or bib longs or leg warmers in colder weather.

Get a set of trousers from Lidl/Aldi.
I used them all last year and never had any problems. They're not waterproof as such - but comfortable to wear on a commute and keep the chill out even when wet. £9.99 on sale at the moment.

i cycle just over 9 miles to work, cycle track and road ,looking for shower proof rather than anything heavier. as for effort lol, well im a bit out of puff at the end of a 1/2
mile long hill

I had considered just wearing shorts only, but having no drying facilities at work i dont want to be doing the return journey in wet shorts .

From what I've had, the montanes are probably about the best on that front, shower proof, light weight, compact, breathable and not too dear. Anything else I've had would be boil in the bag for 9 miles with hills.
I take it you are not wearing lycra shorts they dry pretty rapidly without any special facilities.

Get another pair of lycra shorts/longs to keep at work in case your morning ones aren't dry?

I'd echo what the others have said - i'd go with a pair of lycra longs with windstopper fronts like these:

If you wear waterproof trousers they'll surely get too hot? Having said that I haven't ridden in Norway - does the UK count? 8-)

Don't know. I thought that when I cycled to John o'Groats I'd seen all the rain I'd ever see on a bike in summer and I could look forward to drier rides in the future. But then I learned there's a place even wetter than Scotland. Apparently, Bergen is the wettest place in Europe.
