He was the goods-in manager. It might have "been received and gone missing later", or "only 9 items were ordered"

Nobody asked any questions as it was his job.

There should be separation of duties, different people doing different parts of the job so that it's not possible to commit a fraud without collusion.

If fraud happens it's a failure of internal controls.

Booked in and gone missing later is harder to spot but as pointed out above some of the parts would have been difficult to smuggle out!

Family holidays to Mexico and Turkey, laser eye surgery and new cars. That may not be extravagant to Mr Roderick James but for a lot of people its a pretty good lifestyle.

In my experience, this sort of thing starts small and used against high debts. Because it is easy, it rapidly becomes a greedy habit.
On the assumption that Wiggle had a robust stock integrity process, they probably knew of the losses fairly quickly. The challenge would be in terms of catching the guy 'red handed'.

Of course this is only my conjecture and totally unfounded....

Does this raise new concerns over the possibility of the credit card suspicions at Wiggle that occurred over the last couple of years?

It ran for 2.5 years so it took them a while to get it sorted. He was sneaking two items out a week on average by the looks of things. After the first few he probably started doing it out of habit.

he was in charge of goods, could smuggle anything he wanted by sounds of it, got caught when someone spotted it on ebay.

he suffered what most do, greed, if he just done a bit then quit?

In between here and there
Stock going missing is one of the worst things for a company, trying to track it down is even more difficult.

I have searches set up for ebay up to 50 mile radius of staff's home address, I used to hate myself for doing it! But then It took me 7 days to see one of them decide they wanted to sell some at cost.. Problem now is they all know I do it, so they could quite easily find a way round it.

Thats the strange thing I just thought he was a moron, but this guy was doing the same cost price?

Back in the day in my line of business it wasn't too bad you had ot have decent contact in the trade to take the gear, and then it is really risky making the first deal as you wouldn't know how frinedly I was with them. But now eBay Gumtree etc are a theives paradise, just wish HMRC worked closer with them as this may prevent some of it.

I would hate to be selling loads of prime nicking gear. Don't think I would sleep at night.

I used to work for a company that was once the UK's biggest retailer of music technology - keyboards, recording equipment, electric guitars etc. I worked in their storee on Tottenham Court Road and fortunately got a proper job just before they went bust.

For a member of staff to steal something would be incredibly easy. Simply fill in a UPS form and put it in a box - the items were not associated with their UPS delivery and thus had effectively vanished as soon as they were picked up by UPS. I should stress I never did this, despite in the last few days of my tenure there being strongly encouraged to do so by other staff members.

I got a strong impression that this kind of thing went on regularly there.

When I was a student I used to work in a bike factory in the West Midlands. The amount of stuff that got dropped on the floor was amazing; I "acquired" some interesting head tube transfers, which are probably festering in a box in the attic. Maybe I should try to find them.
