Everything I've heard about Morrisons seems to suggest they are embracing cycling.

+1 on that, the new Morrisons around here in Whitefield has excellent cycling provisions.

The Tesco's down the road though has an awful bike rack that is too small for bikes and is where all the staff go to smoke ;)

My local tesco supermarket is a massive affair, loads of parking for cars and even some for motorbikes. Its also probably the biggest supermarket in southampton. So once you've cycled the 2 miles to bursledon to use it you end up not being able to park the bike. There are three bays for cycles. Not good.

Infact the tesco express over cobden avenue actually has twice as many, and given it has so little space this is great.

Just thinking I should write a letter or email to tesco to encourage cycle usage there. They definately have the space for the bays, and I'm sure they can spare a few hundred quid lol.

Interestingly the Tesco Express you refer to, had their original bike racks stolen, of which there were only three, just recently they restored these and doubled the number, presumeably to allow for more theft, without reduction in the service. After the original theft they encouraged cyclists to bring their bikes into the shop which I thought was quite decent of them. So that Tesco at least, does seem to care.

There's a continental study (somewhere) showing that cyclists actually buy more. Whereas a moton tends to make one weekly trip for their shop, the cyclists studied made a number of smaller (in the amount bought) trips. I seem to recall that the cyclists out spent the motorists on either a per week or per month basis.

(Fairly sure the study is somewhere on Amsterdamize or Copenhagenize).

Surely that's a good thing for theft prevention. Unless the toe rags were
particularly brazen and the staff particularly dopey...........Oh well ..maybe not.

Some years ago I was living in Florida for a couple of months. The flat we had was next door to the local large supermarket.
We could walk out of our front door, hop over a small wall and walk directly into the supermarket
Having done this a few times we were approached by the manager and told if we turned up again on foot we would be banned from the supermarket.

The company had a ban on people arriving on foot as this was not the 'right' type of costumer.

I'd have thought it was the perfect incentive to learning to walk on your hands...;)

Never realised they were nicked. Cool staff though

slightly off the subject of supermarket parking, the British road transport museum, coventry has no bike parking other than a couple of sheffield stands by a bus shelter near the entrance, a bit rubbish considering the museum occasionally makes a big thing of its bike collection.
