Keep the poor riff raff to one side . It's probably to get money from those "oh, run out of" kind of people - who'd want to que up for 10 minutes for one item.

Its more a case of the supermarket having killed off the local corner shop, people then went into the supermarket in a rush as you say but when they had to queue for ages they ended up leaving the items at the checkout and walking out.

Staff then had to be told to put the items back plus they'd lost the sale. Ironic.

Round here all the corner shops say "Tesco Express" or "Sainsburys Local" on them.

I wrote to Sainsbury's to ask them to have "50% off" rather than "Buy 1 Get 1 Free" offers, since I couldn't take advantage without wasting the food as I don't have a family. I had a reply from a manager saying they'd consider my views, but they obviously didn't really care. (By chance, I timed my letter -- and referred to -- the statistics about food wastage in the UK being published.)

Having done this a few times we were approached by the manager and told if we turned up again on foot we would be banned from the supermarket.

I'd have done so anyway, just to be banned :-).

Basically it depends when they got planning consent to build their store. In general, the more recently built stores will have cycle parking because they will have had to have included it in their travel plan as a planning condition.

Morrisons, Tesco and Sainsbury's don't, to my knowledge, have specific bike parking

A new Morrison (Granton) has been built within a mile of my flat and its been built with plenty of cycle parking

The company I work for designed the landscape works there (inc. hardworks & cycle parking)! Provision for cycle parking has increased in the last few years due to such things as achieving a certain BREEAM rating, I also think that the City of Edinburgh Council have more stringent planning laws; everything needs a green travel plan these days!

The local shops/stores around here are actually ok (compared to all the above). But I do have a problem with cycle parking at work.

After moving into a newly renovated building weve just been supplied a bike rack. It only took them a year!.

The worst part is, they picked the furthest possible car parking space, to allocate to cycles. (three of those black racks that are designed for D locks) No-one parks anywhere near there because there are plenty of spaces nearer the building.

Our trust has invested in some wonderful "Cycleworks" steel bike safes, then fitted them not on the hospital grounds, but atthe Park 'n' ride at the top of Portsdown Hill!

An extra 3 km on the commute and 100 metres of ascent, along with the need to add a bus route at both ends of the day!

The idea is good, but it is not what you would call an incentive to start commuting by bike

My hospital is going to have to put in some more parking soon as all the spaces were filled on friday. Wasnt even that warm out. Luckily I get there pretty early but as summer comes it will get a little harder.

My nearest Lidl has the best cycle parking of any supermarket in the area, covered Sheffield Stands near the entrance door.

I thought Tescos was generally regarded as the poorest supermarket for cycle parking. This is certainly my experience in places like York where there aren't even Sheffield stands at one of the large stores and it has a rack that is not secured to the floor and hidden round the corner that could easily be bundled into the back of a van or be vandalised. Similar story in Sheffield. Similar story in other South Yorkshire larger tescos. Similar story in a few other tescos I've seen round the land. Although it's a mixed bag at least the other supermarkets generally have Sheffield stands, albeit limited capacity, in vaguely sane places that are slightly less likely to get vandalised/less don't have to walk an eighth of a mile to get to the entrance.

You did a good job . I work in transportation planning and all Scottish councils across the board, supported by planning policy have indeed become more stringent on these things

Yes- we have these VeloSafes at St Mary's in Portsmouth, and at the Fort Southwick site at the top of Portsdown Hill..... The SMH ones will later be moved to the Queen Alexandra site.

Which is a real shame as the QA site is in Paulsgrove - one of the rougher areas in Portsmouth, and cycle theft is a problem. Apresent I ride a Brompton which definiotely does not go into our store room as that would be naughty - the hill would be easier on one of the other bikes.... now only if they did a VeloSafe big enough for a faired trike!

I used to live just near there. In the flats at the bottom of the dip in Sholing as you head back into town. I used to cycle from there to Knowle Hospital just outside Fareham every day Crikey, I must have been fitter in them days

I'm literally half a mile around the corner from those flats. They're falling to bits now, but the ones across the road in the thornhill estate have been done up 2-3 years back.

Shop at Waitrose and use the free bike trailer service. If your nearest store doesn't have them then ask...

Ok this is not an idea solution for most of Scotland as there are only two Waitrose stores in Scotland (both in Edinburgh), but for me it is only a 10 minute ride to Morningside...

The company had a ban on people arriving on foot as this was not the 'right' type of costumer.

Oh ... I would have responded by turning up by car and buying one thing .. but it wouldn't of been very environmentally friendly.

One of the large Tesco's has appalling cycle parking - that is too close to the building - I have complained every time I go there (not very often) and never park my bike there prefering to attach it to other bits near the building now. (The stands also don't support the bikes so they end up falling over too).

My local one only had 3 stands that were often full, and I would ask for more every now and again. Then came the time that the stand was loose (complained again), and finally free floating!! Eventually they have increased the number of stands plus I've worked out the alternative locking places.
