My bikes only cost £50 (so the wife thinks).

My wife brought me my last 2 bikes so she knows what they cost, she would like me to start building another one but I have said no, for the moment.

Buy it, what is the worst that can happen. You have an argument which will blow over, and you will have your bike. Or you could sell your current one to fund it.

O a C2W scheme

This is how I justified my first road bike, although I started off looking at £500 bikes & said if I commute once a week it'll pay for itself, ended up with a £950 bike & hardly commuted to start with

I would love a titanium bike & keep looking at Enigma, but even doing 10k miles this year I can not justify (to myself) spending £2.5k+ on a bike  Is it going to be twice as good as my carbon bike???

I am a bit odd in that I would rather spend on my wife and kids than I would spend on myself, which is why the wife buys them for me.

C'mon. everybody knows that bikes are totally self funding.... what you save in fuel, gym membership and mental well-being etc. pays for the bike many times over!

In fact, I believe that your frugality means that you should be extracting MORE out of the joint pot, just to redress the balance you know.;)

How old are the kids? You could rent them out to friends and neighbours to do chores and odd jobs.
Charge their services at £10ph. 150 hours worked each over the Christmas holidays will buy you a nice high end bit of carbon bling.

Don't the Esther Rantzen....
