So I keep broaching the fact that I 'need' a road bike with the wife.

I got back into cycling 4 months ago and am slightly obsessed, currently riding a new Carrera MTB which is serving me well but I want lighter and faster...

2 kids and Christmas isn't helping the funding issue but I think it's the perfect time to buy with so many deals on 2015 bikes.

Any ideas how I justify it.

Christmas is a Christian festival, take the kids to church. Tell them it's not about expensive presents, then buy yourself a bike in the new year as you've worked hard for it...

A friend had to bargain with the devil and buy an eternity ring. I simply went with the line that 'thus is what I want for my birthday as it is too much to spend for you, I will buy it myself'. I then made sure I did every household chore for a month.

Go and buy it and then say to your wife over dinner: " by the way, I bought myself a new bike, it was on special offer and I got a great deal." and then move on to something else.

I don't understand joint accounts.

As long as you share all the car and fuel costs, joint utility bills, food, kids' stuff, holidays etc. any excess that either you or your partner have should be yours and not to share. That should work equally both ways.

Other than that, buy the bike and say it's a saving and will benefit the entire family err, eventually.
