How about finding one of those charity gift schemes where you buy a thing 'for' someone and the money actually goes to the charity? I'm sure there are a few that allow you to buy a bike for an African kid to get to school, or for a nurse to do their rounds...

I was sent a leaflet by Unicef.

Just as Arch says, you can "buy" a bike. It is for children to get to school more easily, or a bike for health workers. Unicef is at www.unicef.org.uk.
