Shorts last week......thats shorts last week when it was in the regions of minus 3...was up Falkland hill last weekend and round Auchtermuchty through to Abernethy and had I been in shorts I would also have been in casualty.

Great to hear you are enjoying your cycling and please please let Santa be bringing you a pair of longs.

 You might look into what are called "audax" rides in the UK (we call them "randonnees" in NA). They are a little less competitive than what I understand "sportives" to be, though the longer rides will demand great mental and physical stamina.

I think (from my vast experience of 1 sportive and no audaxes;)), that the competitive element is a red herring. Neither are competitive, except against yourself. I think it was on here I read a quote that went something like "in a Sportive everyone pretends they are racing, and in an Audax, everyone pretends they aren't..." The Sportive I entered, they posted people's times in alphabetical order, rather than time order, so that you couldn't easily see it a results chart. (Mind you, I revelled in a time about 1 hour less than my real one, until they corrected the mistake (which I reported!))

I gather that the main difference is the level of support and 'free' goodies on offer, hence the greater entry cost of sportives.

Anyway, welcome Steve and I'm glad that in amongst the bickering and feuds and nonsense, we're proving useful!

Any chance you could cycle commute, one or two or more days a week? That's the best way to get the mileage up - unless you work at home....

lol well I have 2 jobs Arch, first job is where I take 12 laptops around Fife and teach computing to people in ex mining communities, i could attach a little trailer but it might prove a bit difficult :0

the other job is for a corporate company (naming no names, don’t want to be run over) where I work 9am till 8pm, cycling in should be fine but its getting home in the dark might be a bit trickier, I was thinking through once the better weather comes in to start commuting
