i'm reading on my laptop and i noticed that just to the left the words disappear, like i can't see them in my perifpheral vision (or however you spell it). so i look round the room and i've noticed that when i focus on something, just to the left there is nothing there.

should i be worried?

now its come back, but further left i can see a kind of fuzzy bit, like it's moved, can't explain it. it's like a distortion

Yep, sounds like migraine to me. At college I used to play in a loud band that practised about 3 times a week in a small room.

One day I started getting blind spots, and it got so bad I was scared to cross the road. I thought I was going blind. I went to the optician and he reckoned it was migraine. You don't need to have an actual aching head to have migraine.
