In general if the caliper is designed for a specific size rotor ie 160mm or 203mm then it should fit another brand's rotor.

Are you sure they are for the same size rotors? What are they?

Giant did have their own brand, MPH.

Thanks mate I will check this out and maybe buy a full set as the levers, and calipers were given to me, and being daft, I thought I could just switch them over. By the way am I best to just go to a main Halfords or shop at a small shop?

Hi Mongy and welcome!

Sorry, I'm going to be an arse. They're 'brakes' and it's 'hydraulic'. If you're going to write about them regularly it might be useful. I understand if you now think me a complete tw*t but after a while these things matter.
Don't let that put you off, there are loads of good people who can help here.

If you have a good local bike shop (LBS) then that's generally the best place to get parts and advice. Halfrauds are OK if you know exactly what you want, but their advisors are not always the most knowledgeable and service can be poor. Support the good independent shops.

Must admit, I thought breaks as in bones when I read the thread title.

Unless you know the mechanics are good in your main Halfords, I'd advise a Local Bike Shop who you know does mtn bikes.

MPH is Giants rip off from Hope.

Giant asked hope to kit out there bikes and hope said no (good on them) So Giant just went out and coped them but did not get it right that is why they are hard to find now.

Hi there,

It's not the actual brake calipers or disks, they are both fine. It's the bracket the caliper is bolted to.

If you look at the brakes you will see that the caliper does not bolt directly to the frame. It bolts to sort of aluminum bar which in turn bolts to the frame. These bars/brackets come in different sizes to move the caliper out for the different sizes of disk. All you need to do is buy the correct brackets for the size of disks you have.

Mr Pig, that's correct for some and is becoming more common with post mount coming to the fore on new forks. But if it's an IS direct mount caliper the casting dictates the rotor size. You can get an adapter to increase the rotor size or in the case of hold Hope's a half caliper.

Let's do grammar next. :sad::smile:

Let's not patronize people who have problems with spelling. I'm dyslexic and the only reason my spelling is usually ok is that I run a spell checker. But what if I can't spell, I bet there is 'something' that I can do a heck of a lot better than you ;0)

I'm sure there is. I'm not a great speller either, and a sh1t trypist to boot.
My Daughter is also Dyslexic, if that helps. At least an attempt at grammar could be made. I hoped the smiley denoted that I was in some way trying to make the point lightly and being appreciative of the spelling.
I agree, it's unfair on a cycling forum, but sometimes the demise of the written word is somewhat frustrating.
Yes, I am a grumpy old git.
