I've found that the shorts/saddle combo is what makes the difference for my particular rear end.
Assos shorts + Aliante = fine
Assos shorts + Flite = discomfort
Tal club shorts + Aliante = discomfort
Tal club shorts + Flite = fine
Sorry if this complicates things, but there ya go.
Is the insert in the Tal shorts a lot builkier than the one in the Assos shorts? If so, then I'd suggest that the extra padding is making up for the skimpiness of the saddle (a Flite is smaller than an Aliante isn't it?).

It can be even more complicated than the shorts/saddle combination...

I find that different saddles need to be at different angles to be comfortable for me. My Ariones are comfortable if I have the front part level, with the rear sweeping up slightly. I've had another saddle where I had to tilt the nose down slightly. I never get on with a saddle nose pointing up even slightly because I get genital numbing, but I've seen other riders happy with saddles set up like that.

Oh, and don't forget the question of saddle set-back. That differs from saddle to saddle too. For example, the Arione has a long nose, and it isn't necessarily correct to set it back the same distance as a shorter saddle.

I can always change to a more narrow seat once I'm more experienced. I tow a kayak behind and the whole thing is 20 ft long and heavy uphill. i sweat and then in this freezing weather i freeze after a few minutes of no pedling but it doesn't cost me anything to take my kayak to the harbour. i will stow the trolley in the kayak and strap the bike on the rear deck then do a full circle round Torbay on road and by sea.

i have used the new seat and find it better. However, I think that now I am more used to cycling I am pushing harder on the pedals and less weight on the poor arse.

Good grief! A few months of that and you will be 12st of solid muscle.

I would be looking for a motor on Ebay, not just a saddle.

'Kin hell mate. I would need a titanium drive chain to be able to do that!!!! Oh yes and a motorbike!!!

As for the saddle, you can always get a gel cover (Aldi's around £3) and scrap it when you decide you no longer need it.

I shouldn't have done it, got the wider seat that is.

I now have a lump in my groin the doctor calls a benign cist.

It has only come on since fitting my new seat, although it is more comfortable.

I got a prescription for anti biotics and i may syringe it myself to speed things up.

with regard to my canoe

Cool.....

I can recommend the old skool Selle San Marco Rolls and Regal saddles - the pros still use them these days (quite often to keep the bike weight at the limit) but they are comfy... race fit, no cut out, but work well. About 400g, but much more comfy than a Flite Titanium....

I use an old Rolls on my commuter MTB...seen years of service.

Hope the 'boil' cures up quick...ouch ! - Get propper shorts and some shammy creme (or aquious cream)

I intended to start sea kayaking myself last year but it never happened for one reason or another. maybe next year. I'm only 20 mins from Weymouth

Apart from the copious amounts of respect I now have for you I just love that fact that you are pulling that the wrong way down a one way street  Kudos my god man!!

I hope the lump goes soon. Also it could well be coincidental and not linked to getting a wider seat at all. Best of luck.

If you're load carrying and given the differential height between saddle and bars, you might benefit from lifting your bars up higher. You can get a bar riser of up to 4". I have one on my grunt shopping bike. Not pretty, but effective.
