We go to a place by the sea every year, a beautiful small town. By tradition we have fish and chips on the beach the first evening - no matter what the weather. They are damn fine fish and chips. Fear not we are booked into poncy resteraunts for the rest of the vist. There will be oysters, there will be dots of jus, reductions, jellies, un-necessary micro leaves and perhaps edible flowers.

I tried oysters once, not for me. xx(

It's called quality, like the difference between a £1 Morrisons pork pie and a Melton Mowbray pork pie.

It's called judging a book its cover. I've attempted to eat some expensive attractive 'gourmet' pies and found them somewhat lacking when compared against £1 Morrison's pies and they've ended up in the bin.

Appearance and price are not reliable predictors of quality and tastebud appeal.

I've had some exquisite fish and chips, wonderful sea bass, superb Herdwick Hogget lamb and I won't mention the sticky toffee pudding with salted chicory ice cream.

On the other hand I've been to places where quantity is regarded as an alternative to quality and/or service. I know which I prefer.

No, it's called judging on the basis of quality. And sometimes the claim of gourmet is just a claim.

Quantity wins every time. :mrpig::mrpig:

I don't have the budget or the aspirations to poncydom to fall victim to the vendors of overpriced under portioned culinary confidence tricks.

Quality is a subjective perception and sometimes the claim of quality is just a claim led by price, appearance, the image that the consumer imagines others see him by and is, at the end of the day just a claim.

You're not Patrick Stevens in another guise are you?

You're talking about me aren't you :thanks:

If it's quantity you want, tonight I saw a mixed grill: steak, sausages, a chicken breast, lamb steak, eggs, chips, mushrooms and onion rings. All for £7.95. Not convinced by the quality of the products, or the welfare of the animals involved in the production of that meal.

You've the budget to travel to the States, I've never afforded that.

Actually I'm talking about what I've experienced. The hotel I'm referring to is nearer to where you live than I
