My wife's upbringing was a bit like Jeanette Winterson's as described in her book Oranges are not the only Fruit. She was expected to go to church three times on a Sunday and there was a lot of physical and mental punishment. She is a strong person, as she had to be to survive but it negatively affected two of her brothers. She found it spooky going back to the church of her youth that she hadn't visited for over 40 years.
OT but that's the first time I've heard anyone reference "Oranges" for years. A decade or more. When I first came out, I read that and the supremely cheerful "Well of Loneliness". :surrender:

When us kids were little our local vicar told my mum that because we didn't go to Sunday School us 2 girls would become prostitutes to pay for our drug addiction!! Mum practically threw him out. It is no great surprise churches nowadays have a low turn out

WTF? Although, I've heard worse things said by evangelicals over here.(Actually, some of the comments may have been directed at me)

Either sounds good. Well, the latter doesn't in terms of the Trump thing, but winter in Canada is also appealing.
Really appealing, compared to the nightmarish vision of Trump and his colleagues. (Oh, that's gonna get me sent to camp for sure...)

I still have a certificate of abstinence that belonged to my grandad, and I really don't really remember seeing alcohol in their house, whereas my grandfather on the other side brought whiskey to the hospital to wet the baby's lips when I was born (so I'll blame him for which route I took!:giggle:)
