Apologies for not paying attention, but where are you going in Oz?

my husband's work are paying us to go and live in Canberra for 3-4 years!

PS - we leave on here tomorrow, move in with in-laws. Fly out of Heathrow on Tuesday and arrive in Canberra on Thursday straight into rented apartment with hire car for 6 weeks. Then we need to have found somewhere we want to live (I'm not an apartment type person, much more a rural, space type person) and they will partially meet our rent.

Back from a very good TED talk at the Uni. Several interesting talks about identity, independence, vulnerability and terrorism to name a few and a superb performance poet.

A good day and much to think about.

You will definitely get Kooks in Canberra and all sorts of birds that tend to get sold in pet shops round here.

Clearly you will be visiting Sydney regularly. Please go to the Opera bar at the side of the Opera House, sit outside on the harbour wall and watch the sun go down behind the bridge. The city will light up whilst all the bats from the Botanical Gardens fan out on their nocturnal hunting trips across the water. It's a memory I hope to still have on my dying day. Wonderful.

I suspect we may get there once. We both have family friends in Sydney, but we are not city people at all. I struggle to cope with a small village having lived rurally for most of my life and having lived in some of the most remote parts of mainland England and mainland Scotland. I'm used to space, peace and quiet and the plan is not to actually live in Canberra. I'm not really looking forward to the apartment at all!

Take a ferry from circular key, and go and walk/sit in the Botanic Gardens, you'll forget you're in a city. ;)

Dows 2002 Single Harvest Tawny was on special downstairs. It would have been rude not too.

Bring on the cheese.

If by chance you get across to Manley from Sydney go tohttp://www.thebowerrestaurant.com.au in Cabbage Bay.

I know you are a vegetarian but not sure if you are vegan or eat fish but being a fish lover myself i had the most gorgeous fish dish there. The location is pretty lovely too and i know they do gluten free and veggie food too.

It's been a bit poshed up now from when i last visited in 2003 from the pictures. The ferry ride over is rather nice too.

The ferries are a fantastic way to travel. I loved every second of our time there and cannot wait to go back

Manley is lovely, we sat on the beach eating sushi.

31 months until we go back there.... a long 31 months..... a very long 31 months.

@SatNavSaysStraightOn Sydney is an open city, there is plenty of sky near the waterfront and the people are happy, unrushed and polite, it's completely unlike a northern hemisphere city, there is peace.

Yep i agree i found it to be very relaxing too. Not at all like a lot of other cities.

But then i find cycling round cities in India a great stress reliever and brilliant fun so maybe don't listen to me:laugh:
