You could have gone to Scotch Corner to see the A66 and saved yourself a small fortune.
I used to have a Mazda 6 with a 2l petrol engine years ago, 40mph was all I could get out of it if I took it steady as well.
It was great at going round corners though.
Are you sure you didn't have the handbrake on?

I cheated and drove the i40 ( I think), which runs parallel to Route 66 for much of the way.
Still bought the obligatory Route 66 T-shirt, nonetheless.
