I just walked into the bathroom to find Hover fly crouched over, with a mug from work floating in the bath. It turns out that he, the boss and one of the volunteers (a highly qualified naval architect) have a challenge to sail a mug across the model boat pond at work.

The day of the big race arrived. The weather was fair, a force four blew from the sou'west, veering west south west. Our intrepid heroes arrived by the pond, and as stated in the rules, agreed a starting point, on the west side, under the beech tree. Boss was the first to launch his vessel, a handy little bermudan rigger of 33cl burthen, going by the name of "Broughton Forestry Services", John, the nav. arch. had gone for a simple lug rig on his mug, a touch smaller at about 25 cl, under the name of "Hallet oils". Hover fly had rigged his craft with a square single mast, top and bottom sparred, again of about 35 cl, unnamed, but bearing the image of a black cat.
On the signal, which was me dropping a handkerchief, the vessels were released and slowly at first, they got underway. BFS slew across the pond, hitting the rubbing rail on the northern side of the pond, but boss was quickly onto it and adjusting the sail got her to go back out to the centre of the pond again, where she made steady progress towards the finishing zone.
Oily went as straight as a die, but towards the centre of the course developed a strange oscillating pitch and slowly started to fill with water, out of reach of the bank, (the rules were that the competitors were not to get their feet wet) all her owner could do was watch and hope.
Black cat, oh dear. Let me be charitable and say the imaginary miniature sailors on board were more interested in the scenery than racing. Just a few yards from the start she started to yaw all over the place, she paused in mid pond, came up to a marker buoy used by the proper model boat sailors and rested awhile against it before finally resuming a very erratic course.
Meanwhile in the finishing zone things were hotting up. The extra ballast Oily had taken on slowed her considerably, while BFS came bearing down on her at ooh, maybe 1/4 knots but was still a good 3 yards behind when finally Oily touched the side in the finishing zone and won. BFS came a close second while Black cat came in about 20 minutes later.
