I saw and heard a sparrow in Deptford today and I think I spotted where the nest was. I'd given up seeing or hearing them down at such a low altitude here. So that chirred me up. (As in ''What do you say to a depressed sparrow?'' ''Chirrup'')
And all morning the world smelled of mackerel. First, I thought it was something at home so I looked all around my kitchen. But then my daughter's house smelled of mackerel too, and so did the school playground. (I've had a nasty infection and my sense of smell had disappeared - I think mackerel is the first sign of a returning set of working nostrils. Weird one though.)
