I used to have a server room like that once only 10 times as bad (25 servers each with 7 or 8 cables each plus back up batteries, switched, router, firewall...) until one day we had a power outage and when the generator failed & the back up batteries had expired I asked my boss if I could do something about it. He said yes... I don't think he and I had the same thing in mind...
Every single cable was pulled out, untangled, sorted and both ends labeled as they went back in... The CEO walked in part way through, when we had all the cables out in a tangled heap on the floor...
All I could say was that we were putting the downtime to good use and praying that we would be done in time
! The look on his face was wonderful
.
It took over 8 hours for 2 of us to sort out and luckily I still had no electricity by the time I was done!
Maintenance after that was so much easier and it got H&S off my back.
