I imagine you will want to remove the chainset to grease the BB and a 54 yr old cotterpin might be a bit stubborn. Here's a good way to get them out without special tools:

Err, the inner won't pull out, hence the problems.If you do buy those old Clarks cables don't forget to pull the inner out and put some grease on it. It'll be as dry as a nun's nasty inside and just as rusty. Or indeed any cable.

Thank you - I have many vices, some bigger than others ... and cramps too, so will bear these in mind when setting out on the cotter pins
And make a bike out of the left over.You can hang the cable vertically, make a plasticene cone around the upper end, and pour in some oil, which will work its way down through the cable over a day or so.
