However I don't find road shoes particularly attractive. I know that's not the important thing, I totally get that but it would be nice to spend a hundred dollars on something that I didn't find horrible.
I'm not fussed whether fancy people in bright lycra will turn their noses up at me

Surely you're turning your nose up on road shoes based partly on their looks?
A touch of the double standards.

Personally I have different pedals on different road bikes.
Use whatever pedals you like, in reality no one cares.

One of the 64K
A530's on my Synapse (which I got to test non-clipped in Amsterdam and really surprised me how comfortable and easy they were in trainers.) Mavic, I think, haven't looked at them in a while, SPD's. I have a half mile walk from bike park to office and wasn't going to do that twice a day in road cleats. Wasn't going to have an extra pair of shoes just for that walk. So SPD's it was. Very happy with them when commuting in to London, lots of foot down moments at traffic lights, and still slimmer and more 'bikey' than wearing trainers.

Go for it.

Why not go for a pair of 'touring' shoes, not as chunky as MTB shoes and SPD

As long as I breathe, I attack.
Single sided pedals , a 520 + a600 for me so sufficiantly raodie looking with MTB shoes for me as well.

I don't know if that's double standards? In any case, I was more curious as to whether or not there were practical implications of wearing MTB shoes.

You wear what you like on your feet. I only switched to road pedals and cleats (I have Tri-shoes with road cleats) recently as we had them. Hubster didn't like them so I used them and got on with them better than he did. I have MTB pedals and cleats (on my lovely comfy Shimano shoes) on my CX. Much more practical for walking about in. With the road shoes I have to take a bag with a pair of plimmies in to walk about.

Edited due to atrocious spelling! I don't know what is wrong with me at the moment.
