I love camper vans and owned a 1970s van for a while. Having said that, they are very different to driving modern cars and they are not great up hills. Just something to think about

There's a hire place 100 yards from my place of work and they've got two six-berth and one four-berth left but it's got to be a week at £900-£1200.

But my cunning plan involves him taking the moorland roads which many people will not think of using. The obvious roads are in the valleys and they will be jammed. It is possible that the high-level roads will block up too, but they are the best bet. I walk up to this end of Widdop Road in 30 minutes so it is less than a 30 minute walk back down.

Colin, my sister lives in west Bradford and we are going to stay there for the weekend.

We're thinking of cycling to Addingham on the A65 to watch stage 1, then cycling across to Harrogate to try and watch the finish.

On day 2 I'm thinking of cycling near Oxenhope on Hebden Bridge road to watch it.

Thoughts?

I might create a separate thread, what I would need to know is where I could leave my bike in Harrogate as it'll be chokka there.

I imagine that there will be huge crowds on Cock Hill (above Oxenhope). I wonder how easy it would be to get up there on the day?

If you stood towards the top of the steepest section of the hill, looking down towards Oxenhope, you could get some great photos. This is the view ...

The peloton will be doing the steep little climb from the steam railway station in Haworth, which could be another great viewpoint - Bridgehouse Lane.

The steep, narrow cobbled climb of Main Street in Haworth will look great, but I think it might be very hard to get close to it.

Another spectacular viewpoint would be from the top of Penistone Hill. It is another one of the unclassified climbs on the route which could give the riders a shock. There are about 9 classified climbs but lots of others which don't get a mention and therefore might not get quite so many spectators. Here is the view looking down (the riders would be coming up this from the reservoir, a couple of miles after Haworth) ...

As for bike storage in Harrogate, maybe a few bars of chocolate might be enough to bribe @phil_hg_uk if he is about that day?

I am sure I have read (not sure if it was on the official site or not) that camper vans will not be tolerated parked at the side of the road and will only be allowed in designated/ official/ normal, campsites due to the lack of space on Britains roads

"
Can I park my camper van / motorhome on the roadside of the route to watch the race go by?
This is a common sight in France but in some parts of Yorkshire the narrow lanes, dry stone walls and protected grass verges will make it impossible. People are being advised to park in a designated car park wherever possible."

I think I will be as far away from here as possible, judging by how much hassle the roadworks are that have been going on for the TDF for the last 4 - 6 months just up the road from me the actual event will be a nightmare.
I saw something on the news about Addingham and the locals where complaining that the roads will be closed for 2 days as the TDF goes through it twice and they were not happy bunnies :giggle: so it could be quite difficult getting anywhere near it.

Will it be possible just to get up in the morning, cycle to the Craig Vale Climb and just find spot an hour or so before?
E.g will the roads be open to cycle before they get there?

I think it will depend on your route and if it follows the tdef route at all. Given that some muppetts are parting with 20k to ride the route on closed roads immediately prior to the race I doubt anyone else will be able to cycle wily nilly and certainly doubt we will tolerate cyclist riding between the caravan and the race al a France.

Your best bet is to look at the route and consult your maps to find quiet roads to get you close to where you want to go. The main roads will be closed all day, and some even from the day before. The cavalcade goes through a couple of hours before the race so they won't be allowing anybody onto the route for hours before. The crowds could be horrendous so a bit of lateral thinking might be involved to find a good spot. Whatever you decide to do, aim to get there very early!
