I'm not terribly competitive but I like the interaction of racquet sports with the opponent and the team sports like football. I feel I must start cycling in the same way I must put the bin out - it's got to be done, it gets me out and it gets me a bit fitter but it's a bit of a chore. I've seen enough tri-athletes/cyclists to know that some of them are animals and competing with them would be a big ask for the time I spend in the saddle. I've read the Lance Armstrong books and his training regime was just pain and pain and more pain - where's the fun in that...and where's the skill - might as well torture men and the one left alive wins.It sounds to me like you are quite a competitive person (I gather from you being in to other sports such as football and tennis), and perhaps taking a gentle cycle ride may not be quite exciting enough for you.
If we're sticking with road riding, have you considered Time Trialing? Or perhaps competitive racing? Obviously you will still have to go out on training runs, but it would give you something to aim for that may spur you on.
You also mentioned you like more skill based sports, whereas road cycling is more of an endurance sport. Maybe you would enjoy mountain biking? Definitely a whole lot of new skills to be learnt there.
