Yes keep away from sources of ignition, don’t smoke etc. Fires can be dealt with via CO2, Foam or Dry Powder.

I would say yes to new clean engine oil but only use sump oil if nothing else is available.

Compare the cost of a litre of engine oil to a small maybe 100ml bottle of the stuff from the bike shop.

I will take the engine oil any time.

I too use engine oil, not particularly because I think it per se "best" but because I have 3/4 of a gallon the wrong grade for my car. Whilst it's arguably a bit on the thick side, I reckon any vaguely reasonable oil is fine for something like a bike chain.

Like others upthread, I also use the same oil to clean the chain too. In maybe 20 years I will run out and will then switch to the oil my then car actually uses

I use gear oil. It's inexpensive, doesn't fling, and the pressures a chain endures are nothing to the gears meshing within a gearbox. It doesn't smell brilliant, but if you're not into chain sniffing it's no problem.
