I am the OP of this thread and I've found the solution - Slim Fit. For a long time I didn't consider them coz I expected they'd be similar to skinny. But no, they actually fit! A revelation!

And so the question is: what cut of jeans fits the arse like a slim but affords a little bit more room for the legs?

I going to make a presumption here as I don’t know your gender. But I would suggest your missus’s stretch jeans.😉
I haven't worn jeans in literally decades. I just don't get on with them and can't be bothered shopping around until I find the 'right' brand/cut/fit whatever. I just find them too heavy, too stiff, too ungainly. I buy cotton trou off the rack at C&A, good enough fit and right leg length. No messing, job done.
Yep, jeans in the garden, jeans in the office (ie at work), jeans at rest, jeans in the pub. I just change the colour.
I'm a sort of anti-accy.
