The only acceptable 'colours' for cycling jackets is grey or black. Or something in between. IMO.

Thanks for helping me end this agony Mr Mickle.

Don't get red, Moodyman.

My mate has one, and every time I think he's on my wheel, it's actually some other cheeky bugger in a red top. There are too many of them, and it MUST BE STOPPED.

Every time I see a flash of red in the corner of my eye I know I'm about to get overtaken by the postie

I like custard.

A sound piece there Mickle if you don't mind me saying. It's a common enough question on this forum too so maybe your post could form the basis of a sticky, if not be a sticky in it's own right.

One thing I would add is that once you've made yourself aware of the technologies that are out there, and know what sort of things to expect in terms of waterproof/breathable balance, then it does become a little bit of a trial and error to work out what works for you - and how much you're prepared to pay for that.

Opinions are often divided on specific jackets because people are comparing different qualities and personal needs. That is to say, a jacket that works for one person will not suit the needs of another. There is no 'best' jacket.

I am riding in a sportive this weekend, 60 miles with 7000ft of climbing. The forecast is 62 fahrenheit with heavy rain showers. Do I wear a short sleeved jersey with a base layer, arm warmers and a gilet or do I take a long sleeve jersey with a lightweight showerproof? I know I will get wet.
IMO, if you are exerting yourself in a sporting event, I can't see there is much point to wearing breathables - you are going to get sweaty anyway, well beyond the abilities of any breathable clothing to wick you dry, and will presumably take a shower afterwards. The breathable/showerproof function is useful if you don't ride hard enough to get drenched and you need to stay presentable.

That's an interesting take on it. I can see your point. Personally, I think about comfort too and being hot and sweaty is not something I like. I'd like every little relief I could get from the sweat/heat, even though you're right and it could never be all.

That said, in the context of a sportive (and weather dependant), I might not wear a water proof at all. I'd accept I would be getting wet knowing that showers and towels await me - it'd depend on what else the weather is doing..

White is right - note how all the race capes are white, or even better, transparent so that your sponsors colours and race number are visible - essential for the commute.

No no no no no! With transparent waterproofs, off the bike you can be mistaken for someone out on an escorted day trip from your 'special home'.
