Well I obviously have a right to reply. You are absolutely right.![]()
It's just that some of us non lycra wearers get a little fed up of the lycra fans whose imagination runs riot (post 50) when they fail to understand that lycra might be impractical for cyclists engaged in different modes of cycling to themselves.
The only times I wouldn't wear lycra padded shorts would be on short "leisure" rides, or for a trip down the shops. I wore them for commuting and I wear them all the time otherwise.
This is actually beside the point I was actually making, which was that I get the "impression" that there are a few people who are put off lycra only because of how they look, which does sadden me as it infers a lack of self confidence and lack of self esteem. The point I was making is that even if you did look stupid in lycra, my personal opinion (and let's remember, opinions are what the make the world and this forum go round) surely being comfortable far outweighs how other people perceive you. I would also suggest that bar changing a saddle, changing to more comfortable padded shorts is one of the cheapest way to increase comfort and ultimately, enjoyment of cycling. I started off on a £6 pair of lidls padded shorts about 4 years ago, so I personally can't see novices being put off from cycling due to financial restraints.
To illustrate this fact, I even wear lycra shorts on my MTB, which to be fair probably does look a bit odd.
Finally, people can obviously do what they like, I am a "fan" of padded shorts and if other people don't like them then fair play, it's their arse not mine.
Jon.
