I replace flat & phillips head by hex head cap screws, which are easier to turn with no risk of damaging them.

Pozidrive is also the same as Superdrive, I think it is a brand name thing.

Sloted, flat bladed, screwdrivers should be fettled on a regular basis to keep the business end nice and sharpe edged with a neat flat square driving edge.

I adjust the tip of my flat screwdrivers to be a correct and snug fit on the heads of brass screws before use. That ensures the screw heads are not damaged, something that is unacceptable on fine furniture, or anything that needs taking apart again in the future.

What about JIS or Frearson?
I've been reading that Phillips or Pozi will both damage these. Not easy to.get in the UK. Some Japanese bike sites have places to get them. I think Shimano use JIS.

FWIW screwdrivers are no longer required for bike maintenance. I simply plug mine in to the laptop to adjust the gears or apply a software patch. Now USB cable compatibility is another matter......

Hold on Mickle... Pozidriv is just a Phillips with an extra "cross pattern" on the head, so a Phillips driver can screw a pozi screw fine, but not the other way round. A Phillips is different to a Crosshead, and a Crosshead driver cannot be used properly in a Phillips screw...

Umm, I don't think any of that is right at all. You will munge up both the screw and the driver if you use phillips in a posi or the either way round. The extra "cross pattern" on the head is simply so you can tell by looking at the screw - it doesn't do anything.

Superdrive and Posi are interchangable, one or both ways round, but not phillips.

"Crosshead" is merely a generic term for Phillips, Pozi, and the various other variants we sometimes see.

For the OP, there are some odd not-phillips / not-posi sizes that sometimes crop up, and get munged up regardless - not helped by them seemingly being made of metallic cheese based alloy as well. And you don't normally come across the proper screwdrivers for these either - some kind of Jap thing I believe.

Anyhow, my solution for things like gear adjuster screws is to replace the lot with A2 stainless allen screws.

And for those unfortunate enough to come from the dark side....... A Lancashire screwdriver.
