Where the rear wheel goes in the frame, on older bikes (like mine) the 'drop out' is slotted - allows you to adjust the wheel forwards and backwards (used to be because some frames weren't straight and handy if you break a spoke)
All new frames have vertical drop outs - no fore/aft movement. With the 'horizontal' drop out, it allows you to run a fixed as you can move the wheel to take up chain slack.
That's why it's getting really difficult to pick up a descent old frame these days..... all these fixie types are buying them...
