Bought M520's as my first clipless pedals. Very fond of them now. I find them very very easy to clip into and my feet have never popped out of them when I didn't want them too. Job done!

I previously used m520's on my main commuter bike but after riding around on my road bike with XTR's I realised why there is such a price difference and have ended up changing the m520's for some XT pedals.
The moral being m520's were perfectly good enough until I tried more expensive pedals.

M520's are good enough. The bearings aren't quite as smooth as the more expensive ones, but they work well and last. I've got XT spd's on two bikes, mainly as I'd picked the pedals up for about £46 including cleats, rather than the full RRP. Get the M520's for £20-£25 and you've got a bargain.

Interesting does your foot actually touch the cage to give you more of a platform to push down on?
I currently use m520s on roadbikes because i have a fair way to walk after my commute so spds make sense and i only want to run 1 system so my weekender has the same but if these give you a bigger platform to push on then i might go for them.
I use PD A600 on my roadbike, and did have a pair of A520s. (similar) They are one sided, but have a platform around them. Because they are all Shimano SPD I can wear any of my shoes on any bike. They do impart more power and I don't suffer hotspots. M530s are a bit heavy for road use.

The cages on the PD M530 do touch your shoes and give you a bit more to push on, but for me it's the fact that you have something to pedal against if you don't clip in first time. I actually uses M545's on my trail bike, but am saving for some M785 XT trail pedals. (£48 at Ribble)

The reason I recommend them is because A520 are great pedals, but if you can get the M530 for less than a fiver more with cleats it's an absolute no-brainer.
