No, that's what's concerning. I never normally have a problem on the Dawes. Did 20 miles on sun with no pain (also no traffic lights to stop and start at), commuted yesterday and today and the same spot (right sacroilliac ish) is sore again. It seems to go into spasm while waiting at traffic lights - I pretty much cycled the last 5 miles with my left leg. Not impressed! I've been working very hard on my core and lost loads of weight and it's still bloody hurting - same set up as when I cycled across dartmoor on it, did fnrttcs etc, pain free last year. Might need to rest it over the weekend . . .. . .

Becs do you use clipless pedals? Have you changed your cleats at all recently? I used to suffer terribly with lower back pain on one side and someone suggested it might be cleat positioning. So I had my cleats repositioned ever so slightly so that when I'm clipped my feet replicate my natural walking stance (feet pointing slightly outwards) and it went away.

Becs, I concur with PippaG about copying your walking style when setting up your cleats. However when I was getting a sore lower back at the start of last year I rotated my drop handlebars slightly upwards to reduce the reach and solved the problem in one hit!

Forecast seems to be deteriorating slightly, it's going to be cold. What are the roads like that we'll be on, are they prone to icing up?

Thanks. I'm using SPD-SL cleats with maximum float. I guess it's worth looking into (if anyone can help me with this I'd be grateful!), but nothing has changed since the bike was last comfortable - other than I had almost 4 months off the bike and have just done 95 miles in 4 days with lots of stopping and starting! I might try nudging the seat forward a little for the ride home tonight. This morning I changed my riding style to minimise the number of times I had to stop and start (and took 2 paracetamol half an hour before riding!) and I had no pain, although it doesn't normally hurt on the bike, just standing up straight afterwards! This all started after I injured that side of my back picking up a heavy suitcase 18 months ago. Having a day off tomorrow so we'll see what happens. I won't be riding in ice and sleet anyway!

It's a bit more complicated than that...
The forecast for home (15 miles west of Luton, and on top of the hill) is now for snow all day Saturday, with a stiff easterly wind. Even if it doesn't snow it will be very cold!

Becs, just ease off the plates slightly on the base of your shoes so they can move under pressure. Might be best to mark the location of the original setting in case your want to revert. Sit on your bike against a wall and clip in as normal and just move your feet until they feel comfortable which normally is similar to how you walk ie toes out or in! Once happy tighten up the screws again.

As she already mentioned she is wearing the SPD-SL the floating ones not the fixed (same as I do) so that's not the case obviously..
Sorry if I'm misunderstood but I took AKA Bob's suggestion to relate to where the cleats are fore and aft, i.e. towards the toes or towards your heel, since this affects which part of the foot is directly over the pedal and consequently the maximum angle that each of the ankles/knees/hips reach through their ranges of motion. I don't think float has anything to do with that. (I wear Speedplay Frogs, which provide just about the most float it is possible to get from any cleat system.)

Ooooooh the weather forecast is looking very chilly. If the ride isn't cancelled I'd like a ham sandwich on brown with a side salad and a portion of chips, please. Hmmm cycling in sleet on my roadbke?? I guess I wont book a rail ticket until Saturday morning once I know the ride is still on. As you can see FD and RO Im staying positive at this point but I do wonder whether this ride is a sensible thing for me to do....!

That's what I think too.

Personally I'm blaming an old injury, my considerable bust and an over ambitious first week on the bike! It's not just cycling that sets it off, pilates, rowing, weights and to a lesser extent running will all aggravate it if I do too much or my core is tired - which is why I got a personal trainer last year, core strengthened, back pain gone, then I stopped to save money for the impending house purchase. Just called him and I'm going to start up again and he's got me a free consultation with a sports injury chappie so all is good. I really don't think it's the bike itself - as I said I've done 100s of miles on it with no problems . . . . until the suitcase incident! Thanks for your suggestions though. I'll be going to brixton cycles at some point to check out a new frame for the other bike so I'll get them to have a look at my set up if the impending kettle bells and weights don't help!

Will confirm for for Sat after tomorrow's rest day!

well, Becs, I've considered your considerable bust and I don't think that's where the problem lies. I think you're a little out of condition, you've tweaked something, your position on the saddle is a little awry and you're not as 'still' as you might be. I'd work out what the best position for your feet (which might just involve moving the cleats forward a smidge) and get yourself some no-float cleats and stick with those. And, if you have cleats that tell you precisely where your feet are you can move more of your weight on to your feet and your hands which will give you the freedom of standing when you need to put in a burst of power.

That said, if you go down to Brixton Cycles they'll give you good advice. They fit bikes to women and not the other way around. That, as we both know, is a virtue.
