For chains I've just changed to chainsaw oil. It's thick and doesn't fly off chain saw chains so certainly stays on a bike chain, it also seems less likely to attract grit.

same here couple of quid for a litre

In the shed
When I clean the bike the chain comes off (SRAM9 with quick link) and goes into the bowl of boiling water & Fairy liquid. 1/4 hour later it gets wiped down, hung on the back of the shed door and drowned in WD40 to drive out the water. 1/4 hr later it gets wiped down & re-lubed with cheap motor oil from a 1950s style oil gun. Let it drain, wipe off the surplus and refit. In this weather I expect 2,600 miles without any damage to the cassette.
