I'm starting to see a fair number of bakfiets in Chelsea and Kensington. I saw two people on a triplet in Battersea Park yesterday. It's all good stuff.

I only saw one cyclist on the way home, he works in the gym I go to, but I've just been out with my husband so he could measure the distance of his run, and we saw a good half dozen combinations of parent and child cyclists. Including a family who were shopping in halfords earlier for a new bell, bless 'em.

Checked out the video of the carbon road bike I came across this morning, spd-sl's, shaved legs, team kit but the rear camera shows him trying hard, although not catching, until the 13% part of the hill and then it's all over:evil:.
Nice to know the local hills I have been searching out for to ride on my commute are helping my climbing strength as I did not have to try at all^_^ .
This is on a hill that the very first time I cycled up it, over a year ago now, I had to get off and walk the last part:blush: .

I was cycling home from school with the kids tonight (we do this only a handful of times a month due to weather, my shifts and a protective mum) when we caught up with a family walking along the mixed use path we were on. We slowed down and my disc brakes made a squealing noise which clearly anounced our presence at a safe distance but the mother/grandmother of the group turned around and announced loudly "ooh, you really should get a bell!" I bit my tongue but I was really thinking why? because even though they all heard us approach and turned to look they continued to mill around the entire width of the path like a herd of lost sheep!!!!

Whatever the reason it's great that more people are turning to bikes (and I'm in the motor trade!!) and yes, there will be loads of 'all the gear and no idea' (I'm still that after a year) but some will learn and some won't and the sport/hobby will be all the better for it.

The worst thing that could happen is if 'proper' cyclist sneer at them and drive them away.

I have faith that it will be open arms in
the main based on my experience!

Even those who give it up, having tried it, will probably become more considerate motorists as a result. That can't be bad.

i don't think anybody is saying its a bad thing, quite the opposite. what is funny is the all the gear no idea mob that those of us who havent got bike that weighs les than a fart are leaving in the dust without trying. one very nearly had his carbon thing crushed under a van as he didn't quite understand that red means stop fo a reason. the words as he arrived next to me at the lights were " oh F**k it I am going" it was a lovely skid he did when he saw the van .
