Not to disagree, knowing nothing about health/fitness/diet etc, but...

In a year I've lost 2 and a half stone, and the only thing I've changed about my lifestyle is cycling. I now commute to work and ride on rest days too. I have an AWFUL diet, reguarly eating rubbish, at awful times of day and night, but I haven't changed that at all!

Everyone is different for some of the lucky ones it is possible to lose weight and still eat crap. In the long term there will come a crunch time when you reach an equilibrium and then you have to look at dialling the nutrition to go further. For me that was at the 12.5 - 13st mark from 16.5 stone mark. Naturally if you do no exercise then suddenly do exercise the body will respond but it will not do it forever. Everyone is different and there are loads of variables. I felt it safer to recommend eat cleaner and do exercise than eat crap and exercise a bit more vigorously. I am not an expert by any means just been on a long journey and wanted to point out what I learnt on the way.

How high is your BP?

17st Jan 2011 12st 7lbs this morning.

BP 155/88 - 165-90 Jan 2011, I do take some natural supplements, but last night it was 122-74, told the Doc to give me 6 months to try and sort it out by reducing weight, fats, booze and fags, managed all but the fags.. which is next.

Cycled 5000 miles since Jan 2011 4000 of those since June to and from work roughly an hour each way 4-5 days a week 47 years old.

If Ihad a golden nugget of advice it is to excercise long enough and regular enough to develop an "excercise conscience" that when you skip an excercise slot, you regret it, and you miss the buzz you get from it..

hi...ive taken up cycling again after 20 odd years to try to lose weight and get my blood pressure down...

do posters think cycling will achieve this...and will leisurely cycling be any good or do you really need to build up a sweat...

ive gotten into the habit of cycling for an hour every morning...maybe doing 10 or 11 miles...

im enjoying it...but have posters had any experience of whether it would be effective..

im 16 stone and 5 10 so really need to start losing weight...

appreciate any response...

Bread is a killer. I don't buy it anymore, only wholewheat Pita (which I eat sparingly, as it is still fairly calorific).

Booze!!! Cut out the booze (if you drink) and you will win 3 battles...
1. Booze is calorific
2. Less likely to snack on cr@p food if you haven't been drinking
3. More likely to get up early doors and out on the bike, the following morning

I've put on about a stone since I started cycling again. I now cycle to places that I used to walk to and so burn off fewer calories.

I also eat snack foods after cycling that I never ate before. Presumably I'm consuming more calories than I'm burning off.

The biggest danger in excercise and losing weight is resisting the inevitable increase in appetite.

Strangely I find it much harder to keep a clean diet on non cycling days now, in the beginning it was really hard but now I look at why waste that 400-500 calorie effort and stuff my face post ride.

On days off I get really bad cravings, mostly for comfort foods.

2stone off me since October. My diet is better because as I've got fitter I crave healthier food. I ride between 80 and 140 miles a week and now own no powered transport by choice

It'll definitely help

I am the opposite , cycling did nothing for loosing weight , in fact i ate more and stayed at 16stone , i have had to cut right back on the food to get down to 14 stone and and stuck now on watching what i eat all the time.

I got my bike and into cycling back in December 2010 and in the year that has passed I've gone from over 23 stone at 6'4" down to 17stone. Initially a large portion of it was due to cycling however I've also started running and swimming, in fact doing my first triathlon (sprint) tomorrow and feeling pretty good.

Still a bit of podge on my but I haven't noticeably changed my diet apart from less takeaways, obviously as you build muscle and lose weight you will plateau but doesn't mean you're not healthier. Personally diet for me is the hardest thing to change, I would never cut out carbs - potatoes are just too delicious!

I find the more you go out cycling the more you'll get into it and want to do it, healthiness can get addictive

thats enough cycling to lose weight, but you need to reduce calorie intake also. you could diet or do what i have and just kept to 3 healthy meals a day, seems to be working for me, almost 1 1/2 stone in 2 months. ive no been on a fad diet, just simple healthy meals at the same time each day. i only snack on fruit

you may find you eat less than before. i find when i exercise my body seems to crave healthy foods, it seems to take less to fill me and i generally feel better about myself so pick less
