three wheels on my wagon
Way back when, at about 17 to 22 years old I used to weigh about 11 to 11.5 stone and I am about 6'2" I used to drink what was termed as 'more than enough' probably 6 to 8 pints a night every night? I was out on my bike every day and used to run occasionally. I wore 36" waist jeans to get them over my thighs and a belt, When I packed in I put on 3 to 4 stone in a month and the jeans were suddenly tight on my waist but loose on my thighs. I can understand your wish not to be 'skinny' but like a lot of the comments already posted I wish I was back there, doing it the other way. A bit of weight work and a talk with some of those who work down at the gym may help though. Good luck and keep turning those wheels.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned this already, but Chris08, you're almost exactly the same height and weight as Bradley Wiggins.
Trouble with that is that Bradley Wiggins wants to be a big muscly rugby player.

I haven't read the thread and Im assuming someone has said this already, but just to reiterate what [poster's name] said; protien and a gym membership.

I was exactly the same at 16, and was very much until my mid 20s. Two things "sorted me out"; moving out of home which conincided with a dietry shift towards fatty foods and beer, and a mass decline in cycling (well, exercise generally) by virtue of the fact that I moved to within a 20 minute walk to work.

I do stress however that this isnt the healthy or medically approved approach and it has now taken me the best part of 12 months to rectify the mistakes of only a few years ago.

Concentrate on the staying healthy bit; mother nature and old father age will take care of bulking you out in time.

Indeed. And cycling 40 miles a week and eating like a typical teenage boy clearly isn't the solution.

Chris08, as others have said, you need to eat more protein if you want to bulk up, but you also need to put in the hours in the gym. It won't just happen by itself. The current issue of Men's Health magazine has a feature on how to work out to get Danny Cipriani's physique (he's 6ft 2 and an athletic 14 stone). Might be worth a try?

Just weighed myself and it came to exactly 11 stone.

In a typical day i would eat/drink:
  • Breakfast: Bowl of Cheerios (cereal) with milk, Glass of orange juice.
  • Mid-morning snack: Chocolate bar
  • Lunch: Sandwich, bottle of coke, maybe a packet of crisps/ fruit.
  • Throughout afternoon/ evening: 2/3 cups of tea/coffee & 5 biscuits?
  • Tea/ evening meal: Main home cooked meal- spaghetti bolognese/ chicken & rice etc.
  • Bowl of cereal before bed.
Maybe starting doing weights would be a good idea and i think the main problem is my waist because again, my jeans don't fit. My jeans are a 34/ 32 but now i think it would be best for a 34/30, don't even know if they make them but haha. and i can feel certain hip bones/ rib bones that i didn't normally notice if that makes sense?

Just when i put my hand on my hip/ rib all i can feel is bone and i feel really skinny.

When I was working on the shop floor, I ised to take tuna mayo sandwiches to work (4 rounds) and a couple of mars bars, I would go to the van and get a double bacon sausage and egg sandwich, then when I got home in the evening, I would have a full cooked meal. It was a physican job though, and involved picking up lumps of steel, working on them, and then carrying them up and down a factory floor to different sections for others to machine them. I only started to put weight on after I switched tio a sedentiary job.

Just read this properly again.
How on earth can you survive eating so little? OK, I ride 12 miles a day, and have a fast metabolism, but this is still less than I eat now, and I'm a middle-aged man with his growing years well behind him. When I was 16 I was probably eating twice as much as you - up to 4,000 calories a day I estimated at one point.

I'm guessing that you are subject to a bit of bullying, and you want to bulk up to stop anyone and his dog from picking on you, and every girl and her dog from taking one look and going elsewhere. Unfortunately some people just don't put on muscle mass. And in any case, you are still a good few years off bulking up properly - even top-class athletes have to wait until their 20s to achieve the muscle tone that they need. Your second problem is your choice of hobby. Cyclists are notorious for having big legs (if you are a sprinter) and puny torsos. And if you go for distance, then your body will produce some very fine muscles, but of the small and wirey nature rather than big stand-out ones.

My advice? Generally, don't follow my advice as I generally got it badly wrong from 16 - 30 (and some say even beyoond that). Find yourself - if you enjoy cycling, push the distances, get strong, get fast, and if people don't like that, stuff them. They may be bigger and stronger, but if they can't ride 50 miles before lunch, or 100 miles and still walk tall the next day, then they are less than you. At least in one respect.
