Does anyone know if there is such a thing as a bike bag that has no extraneous padding etc so can be folded up for travelling - OK, strange request, but this is for travelling on the train where bike has to be in a bag but doesn't need loads of padding and can be folded up and carried on the bike too - remember seeing a product from New Zealand once that reckoned could be folded up to A4 and only weighed a kilo or 2. you don't say what size bike, inexpensive compact foldable covers that stow on the bike when not in use such as the below link are pretty easily found for folding bikes.

dunno if you could take the wheels off a full size bike and get it in the same type of bag?

I was on the look out for something similar and affordable for a long time, if I'd known about this then I might have bought one (if it was 50% cheaper). ^_^

I've used cardboard bike boxes for a few years now, never had a problem obtaining one and they are very protective.

I have a very simple solution (albeit for a folder at the moment but easily made for a full size bike) ....... Imagine a giant shower cap made from very lightweight ripstop nylon ... shaped like a bike (pretty much a rectangle with one long edge open with a hem and elastic. The whole thing pops over the bike, with wheels off and strapped to either side of the frame.

The other option that we have taken (but haven't yet needed to implement) is our "end of tour jobsworth on the train solution" - it's a sheet of non-woven fibre material (like a j-cloth) that garden places sell as weedproof membrane + a roll of tape and some cable ties. Cable tie wheels either side of the frame, wrap the whole lot with the sheet material, taping it up. Hey presto, a parcel to take on the train ... and open it and throw away the sheet (costs peanuts) on arrival at the destination. [And when we've been organised we've mailed the "bag" in a poly envelope to the last B&B on the tour route.

If you go to my Blog http://adenough1.blogspot.co.uk/ and scroll down to the end of Paris South you will see a crap picture of my Raleigh Royal outside the airport waiting to be checked in.
The bag it is in cost me £6. Off e-bay. Probably from China. It weighs about 300g. I've flown with it 4 times. Also used it as a grounsheet and once slept inside it in a disused building.
The quality is crap and I've now flung it. It offers minimum protection but you can see it's a bike. It's covered with pictures of bikes so no argument with check-in staff.
You just need to pad the bike with bubblewrap or bits of cardboard. It's very big so will fold over for a small package for the train. gaffer or sellotape it up. You have to be careful unpeeling/ untaping it, as it is, as I say thin material. I just cut the tape and leave the rest on.
I think Amazon do it as well.
