Shetland does have a very good hospital and you'll often find excellent clinicians in remote areas who move there for the quality of life. We had to leave the Isle of Arran when my wife's condition worsened - even though it was only the presence of a world class surgeon at the tiny Cottage Hospital in Lamlash that identified her issues.

https://www.shetlandtimes.co.uk/201...ons,good education and uncrowded surroundings.

Having said that, the shout for Inverness/Beauly/Black Isle is a good one - I'd recommend Dingwall. The same islander "can-do" attitude and a micro-climate that sees it sheltered from the worst of the winter excesses.

The answer is, of course, 42 (surprised I'm the first in with that..).

You are too far North for me to know much, anything above Watford and I'm lost, though I also dislike the hustle bustle and grime of West London, but it pays the bills.
Hoping to be in a good place in 6 years so we can go somewhere greener...

If you choose Cumbria you'll have to careful about location, otherwise you'll be overrun with tourists.

North of Keswick should be quieter and still close to Carlisle.

We will be facing the same need for medical services as we age so we are retiring to the Trossachs, which puts us an hour from Stirling, Perth, Glasgow and even Edinburgh. However as we discovered driving back into Glasgow from the north last night in the rain, Scotland gets nightmare traffic as well as England.

Lots of nice small communities in and around the Pitlochry area. Remote - if you want that. But the A9 means Perth, Edinburgh and Glasgow all fairly accessible. And great cycling roads too.

Good luck with whatever you do.

Where to start with this one, I've got loads of perfect suggestions although two of the better ones have already been mentioned and Shetland is as far removed from the hustle and bustle as you can get but if you don't fancy island life (and I know it's not for everyone, which is probably why it's so good) your not going to be convinced on a forum. Inverness or a huge radius of it, would also be perfect as there are loads of great villages on the outskirts, big hospital and there always seems to be some large project going on to improve the infrastructure so much so, I'm looking up that way myself if my current job doesn't work out. Aberdeen is the exact same, we nearly moved just north of the city and the bypass is amazing, never quite enjoyed it as much as Inverness but that's more a personal thing after working in oil and gas for a time. Perthshire, Stirlingshire have exactly what you are looking for, although don't think the hospitals are particularly good. If you were in those areas you would probably be transferred to Dundee or Edinburgh respectively. Don't know an awful lot about Perth but it has some of the most beautiful places in the country and the A9 is finally being upgraded, so the links are better and Stirling is similar as I'm heading over that way myself tomorrow for my monthly 50k round Loch Katrine. Brings me to my own place, which is a 45 minute cycle to Glasgow city centre and 20 minute drive can see me in the city or down by the Ayrshire coast. The first hole at my golf club tee's off in East Renfrewshire and the first green is in North Ayrshire with lots and lots of great cycling options I'm still exploring 3 years in. I've only scratched the surface as there are lots of great options and I could go on about their many benefits all night. :okay:

I'm sorry but driving into the city trying to get back over the Kingston bridge can be busy, but it's nothing compared the traffic I've experienced on the M25 or similar.
I often think, it is a glimpse into our future if we don't do something about it but we still have a bit to go yet.

Gilbert Bain hospital in Lerwick surely able to cope with most issues you're likely to come across with MS.
I don't think I'd rule out Shetland on that basis if you are happy with it in all other aspects.

Thanks team, some interesting ideas, keep them coming. And some of you could be right in that I might be looking as the issue from the wrong end. A good idea checking in with an MS forum, and checking out Lerwick Hossy.

Lots to think about, but that's the beauty of the huge intellects of CycleChat.

Heck, just run that 4 minute mile, and you will be fine...

Come down here to London. The medical facilities are absolutely A1. You can be as anonymous as you want, and the locals don't care what you do and they don't spend their lives curtain-twitching. The opportunities for waving a Silver Pigeon around outside your front door might be a bit limited though.

Cumbria is a dream place for me. Sadly will never be able to afford a decent place in the Lake District.
