thread started on how motorists (don't) pay for the roads, and has continued in that vein....

Sorry but it was started not on how motorists (don't) pay for the roads but on how the Under Secretary of State for Transport, Mr Mike Penningm, doesn't know how roads are funded and I wrote to my MP regarding this.

It started on the ignorance of the Transport minister about major details relating to his remit.

Mind you this was the comedian who believed there was a 'war' on motorists

Hmm okay a junior monkey. But it's the sort of ignorance that could lead to a war on 'killer cyclists who don't pay road tax'

I think you misunderstand Banjo's point.

All other things being equal, a motorist puts more tax into the Govt coffers than a cyclists who doesn't own a car. It's not just VED, but the taxes collected via fuel, servicing, MOT, parking fines, speeding tickets, etc.

And all things being equal, a motorist will cost the Govt more through their contributions to pollution, congestion, degradation of the environment, wear and tear on the road (i'm sure I've missed a few others).

Thread started on how ignorant the Under Secretary of State for Transport is.

EDIT: Just read through the whole thread again, and saw that this has already been said!

indeed.

If you really wanted to throw your MP in to a spin, you could ask him what value the DfT put on the rental value of public space given over to motor vehicles, (and, in particular, cars), and how the DfT calculated the negative effect of cars on land values. You could also ask him the cost of dealing with rainwater run-off from roadways.

Look at the larger picture, and cars don't come close to paying their way.
