I generally wear a helmet but couldn’t give a toss whether anyone else does. Personal choice innit?
The only time it paid off was when a tree fell on me during high winds.
You don’t generally wear one to protect you against things falling out of the sky!

It’s a bit of a shock coming off like that when off road. That’s why if you ask any regular mountain biker if you should wear a helmet they are surprised you even have to ask.
