Thanks, I've changed cassettes several times before, only this time I had the problem. The lock nut wrench I use is Shimano-specific.

This might be one of those "Why didn't you say that in the first place?" moments (), but when I got the new cassette, one of the spacers was broken, so I took one of the spacers off the old cassette to use on the new one (an identical Shimano cassette, I think).

I really need to get the wheel off and have a close look.

Not sure if you've seen these two docs then: Installation , Schematic. They show you where the spacers etc should go.
Good find. Thank you.

WHY DIDNT YOU SAY THAT IN THE FIRST PLACE!!

Sorry to nanny I assumed you'd never done this before...not sure why, my fault.

Sorry to hijack the thread for a little bit  but it seems silly to start a new one.

I also noticed a little play with my cassette, by pressing on the edge of the cassette I can feel play..... maybe 1 to 2 mm, never thought much about it until I read this thread.

The cassette is this one - It's fair to say that I don't have any problems changing gears but my concern is that it might damage the hub.

I have a 1mm spare spacer (from a 10 speed 105 shimano cassette) so after reading some of the advise here, I went and fitted the spacer, between the cassette body and the hub....... made no difference to the play. The lock nut is also tighter that one would need to (if I were to follow the shimano instructions).

I think I have another spacer that looks more like a 3mm (single speed conversion kit )..... I'm thinking just to try that for a test and see if the play goes away.

If you are wondering, the hub body has no play though.

I checked the wheel and the lock nut had completely unwound [pic]. I tightened it up by hand before riding home (at least to stop the rattling). When I got home I checked the cassette and tightened it up again. Let's see if it's OK now.
