Cycling's dangers come from things largely outside the sport itself
Well, no. I'd say falling off in a big heap in the peloton and smashing your collarbone, or falling off on a descent and smashing your skull on a telegraph pole, or hitting a motorcycle and dying, are things very much within the sport.
Obviously, there's no intent for these things to happen. There's no intent for people to get seriously injured in boxing, either. And yet, it happens in both.
Ah, but the overt point of boxing is to injure your opponent, one might say. And yet, just as many people get injured in the professional cycling ranks as in professional boxing. So, if this is the case, why are as many people being hurt in the non-contact sport as in the contact one? You could even argue that the latter is actually more dangerous on that basis.
Let's face it; in both, the participants are in no illusion as to the risks involved.
