Thanks... it doesn't help that I haven't got a pedal spanner.
Bit of a clue to the problems you are having, methinks.

Ah, but if the spanner is pointing downwards, then the right-hand pedal is unscrewed by pushing the spanner to the front of the bike .You are unwinding it the right way aren't you?
Reality check:-
Both pedals unscrew by winding towards the rear of the bike. This means that for the r/h pedal it's anti-clockwise and l/h it's clockwise.

To remember thread direction, just think 'right is right, and left is wrong'!Ah, but if the spanner is pointing downwards, then the right-hand pedal is unscrewed by pushing the spanner to the front of the bike .
Rothenburgers are quite good and don't have much slop. No good for pedals though. I have a standard Britool open spanner that works well. You can buy a much cheaper one and thin it down on a bench grinder too. A pipe added to the end of it with a mighty wallop from a lump hammer can add a bit of torque.Adjustable spanners are useless on a job that needs any more than minimal force. There's too much play in the jaws, you need a decent pedal or open ended spanner.
As a Mancunian I believe the correct term is 'Liverpool Screwdriver'
