I agree with being able to do as you wish at your leisure. Unfortunately for us in this instance, once we had made the decision to view the dinosaur skeletons, we were stuck in an incredibly slow moving shuffle between the exhibits. There was no opportunity to stop and view said exhibits with any degree of thoroughness, due to the continuing waves of oncoming visitors. The excessive heat & humidity didn't help.

It isn't an experience I would wish to repeat with a young child.

There's always London Zoo if you like that sort of thing, and there are several city farms as well.

P.S. I was born a Cockney and raised a Gooner xxx

Take your family on a tour of letting agents. Hours of fun laughing hysterically at the descriptions of cupboards you could rent for a couple of grand a month.

If you end up City/Tower Bridge way, the often overlooked Bank of England museum is worth a quick visit. You get to hold a gold bar (way heavier than I was expecting!)

Another possibility is a football stadium tour if the lad likes the Beautiful Game. I know the Emirates do one (which includes the Arsenal museum in the ticket price), can't say for any of the other London clubs. Would be rather surprised if they didn't.

save you the trouble - this is what it looks like ;)
