Katie Price needs help

For her own safety prison might actually be a safer place and a better option. She won't have access to drugs, alcohol and away from people who are supposed to care for her. It will help with her detoxification. She has gone past the reputational stigma some time back so for her this is survival.

Really?

Many previously clean people have become addicted to drugs whilst in prison.

You been watching too many movies where they show the hard core lot in maximum security prison for dramatic effect. Her's is a driving offence and prisons have various categories.

Now you have me imagining Katie Price leading a jail break with Nicholas Cage and Idris Elba.

As I said its a drink driving offence and she not going to general population. Might want to read the article in full.
You said she won't have access to drink and drugs. That's nonsense. That's all.

Richard Burgeon's someone I have little to no time for, but his quote's pretty much on the money:

He added: “Prison is often the worst place to deal with the drugs and other problems that lead many to commit certain crimes in the first place. Unprecedented cuts to prison officer numbers make it much less likely that prisoners get the support they need."

Nacro suggested:

“These latest figures show that not only are people with drug problems being sent to prison rather than being properly treated but that people actually develop drug addictions whilst in custody,” he said.

“This is a stark reminder that in far too many cases sending someone to prison is doing far more harm than good, and that our broken justice system must be fixed.”

Now what part of the article didn't I read properly?

This is true. What is also true is that if you are addicted then it's incredibly hard to get help.
Firstly, it's impossible to get help until you decide that you need help. For many people this can take a while.
Then, if you do decide you need help it can take months, if not years to find a residential placement - in many cases it takes court before a place can actually be found.

Cynics may (indeed have) say that KP's attendance for treatment may be a device. I hope it's sincere and that she makes the very best use of the expertise of the Priory Group.

She has pleaded guilty and her sentence has been deferred while she goes to The Priory for treatment. This will probably keep her out of jail this time. But it will be her last chance and she looks favourite to to it again.

Maybe we should have a CC whipround and buy her a bike?

In the unlikely event of a custodial sentence, Price will be a short term prisoner and will become part of the general women's population.

As an aside, the highest security category one for women was abolished a few years ago.

Someone at the Prison Service worked out that while the likes of Rose West is among the nastiest of criminals, as a woman, she doesn't need the highest walls and thickest bars to keep her locked up.

Locally to me, that saw the end of 'she wing' in Durham's town jail which was a prison inside a prison.

Many here seem keen on more prison sentences for those who are unwilling or unable to behave in a way that is not harmful to the rest of us. I understand that and I also understand that prison is very expensive, prevents people contributing to society and has a poor record in preventing recidivism. It also makes getting back into employment more difficult.
All of that makes it bad for the rest of us.

Is there room for convicted people to be subject to close monitoring along with training as an alternative to incarceration? A bit like probation but with intensive support and immediate sanctions?

Sounds good, but... what sanctions?

To a degree, we have the "soft option" of "Community Service", which is, in my experience, a complete joke.

I would be reluctant to bet on that

No idea, but, at least for the duration of time she is in prison, she cannot be potentially killing me (or mine) with her driving, so, I will settle for that.
There's not enough prison space to house all those who would need locking up under that criterion.

And KP would be out within weeks. What then?
