Jeremy Vine calls for drivers to be banned from overtaking cyclists in cities

He has a point - sort of - when there is a lot of congestion
But at some time and in some cities then the cars can move quite quickly with no problems - OK that might be at 2 in the morning but telling cars they have to remain behind Doris on ther shopper bike (with basket on the front) while she is doing 6 mph while they are on a wide 30 mph road with no traffic - is not going to go down well

I bet that even in London there are times when cars move at a speed greater than the slower cyclists (like Doris above)

Vine can be a total knob at times! (In my opinion anyway)

Vine is a total knob all the time.

I actually don't want cars sitting behind me as I struggle up hill, I just want them to pass me safely. I don't want to hold anyone up the trouble only comes when people can't be bothered to read the road and wait until there's room to get by.

I think his comments are more tongue in cheek, reflecting motorists common opinion back on themselves.

Fair enough if you ask me.

It’s on the cards in Scotland that if drivers injured pedestrians and cyclists or other vulnerable road users they may find themselves in a Scottish prison for a considerable length of time. This was featured on the BBC news website last week as laws in Scotland regarding motorists are going to be considerable tougher.

Do you think vine ever lies in bed drifting off to sleep, then suddenly realises he's likely initiated real life road rage situations with his divisive drivel?

Nope - I think he thinks that people who do not agree with him are just wrong so their opinion doesn't matter

i see he's featured in the latest GCN video on road rage
i haven't seen many of Vines videos, is he still doing them?

i think the point made at the end of the GCN clip rings true the most, an angry driver can do a lot more damage to a cyclist than a cyclist will ever do to a car

personally i used to have a lot of road rage as a cyclist, waving my hand at drivers and the like. i've almost completely cut out that behaviour now and while it still scares the hell out of me with close passes i never raise a hand. unfortunately it's something that is always going to happen and me getting angry won't change anything.
i just hope the shift continues to get people out of their cars where possible and cycling infrastructure can be improved to make it safer for us.

You been in London lately. Still clogged with 6 mph motor vehicles. They all need to get out and cycle, it’s faster.

I think that's Vine's point - that the vast majority of the time, a car that unsafely passes a bicycle in a city will be re-passed by the same cyclist about 2 minutes later as the aforementioned a$$hat sits and waits for the traffic to reach the lights.

Even near me, within the urban areas of Walton you aren't going to get anywhere any faster by overtaking a cyclist. We have a 30mph road that goes from the BP roundabout near me to the High street / Walton Bridge. The average speed for that road is 14mph. The vast majority of cyclists will get to the bridge before a car starting at the roundabout at the same time. The car will zoom ahead, hit traffic by the coop - the bike will go past, the car will overtake again, get stuck by the high street and be passed by the cyclists, the car may get another chance at the overtake before the bridge, the cyclist will filter back past again. Its only when the traffic hits the 40mph road that it is likely to go faster than the average cyclist can catch up to.

I don't think banning cars from cities is the way forward, unless there are adequate bypasses. it might work in London (I've neevr driven there) but for a smaller city like Plymouth it wouldn't work because the roads skirting the city centre are simply not up to carrying that much traffic. More bus lanes (which also allow cycles) I think is a better use of money. A bus is generally slower and because of the stops it is unlikely to catch up and overtake a cyclist further down the road. Also, they are usually covered my cameras which on its own is a big incentive for buses and taxis to drive more safely if they know they are being watched.

If you ban cars from cities, there will be less revenue from parking and ULEZ chargs etc, so even less for highways/councils to spend on safe cycling infrastructure

We surely can't be far from the point where even the dickheads in parliament realise that there's not enough space in this island for people to have so many huge cars. There has to be a point where we have to start limiting the numbers of vehicles on our roads and how big they can be. A time that can't come soon enough for me.
