Excuse my ignorance- what tooth combination denotes a compact chainset?

I'll be buying a geared bike soon and I don't think I need a compact.

Compact chainset has a 110mm BCD. 'Standard has 130mm BCD. You can fit 53/39 rings to a 110mm BCD compact chainset, but it won't stop it being a compact chainset.

OK. One bike has a compact 50/34 with 12-27 out back, hardly can remember when I last used the inner ring. New bike has a pro compact 52/36 with 11/28 out back which I prefer and use a far wider range of gears,Di2 helps, but I find I am using the 36 more than the 34. Living far away from Yorkshire The Peaks and Lakes, Cornwall and Wales I know little of the climbs often quoted by those living in different parts of the UK. Most of what happens here tends towards rolling terrain with the hilliest stuff being the chalklands of the Chilterns and the Downs. Climbs tend to be short but can be on the steep side and I'm pretty sure my knees would be the first thing to complain if I went to a standard chainset.
