any ideas what to do with it now?

It's fresh - was still warm when I found it yesterday ..was hoping it was just stunned but as it didn't suddenly recover and take flight, I'm pretty sure it's dead. It's got no visible injuries, it's head it a bit wobbly, so was probably a bird meets car kind of thing early yesterday morning.
It was ringed too, so I've done all the reporting to the website on the ring etc. So now, I guess its up to me to do something with it. But what?

The suggestions so far are:

1.Cook it...too horrible to even contemplate.

2.Give it back to my rather macabre 5 year old who sneaked it into bed with her last night before I confiscated it and popped it in the freezer. She'd get a few days play out of it....and it beats barbie hands down.

3.Find someone into taxidermy who fancies doing a really beautiful barn owl...(best one so far..)

4.Give it a decent burial alonside the hamster and the cat.

5.Keep it in the freezer until the 13 year old gets around to actually making the resurrection machine he's been talking about for so long.

So what do you think?

You sure it's not Speicher badkitty?

There's a dearth of Barn Owl recipes on the internet, not even the BBC has one and they have everything.

Put it on someones car grill and then gently point out that you think they've hit a rare bird.

In fact get it stuffed and do that, it's a joke that could run and run.

I didn't think Speicher was a Barn Owl !!

Let natural recycling take its natural course. Leave it outside , a fox will probably eat it before the day is out. I got rid of a putrid magpie in that way.

Badkitty, I love the bit in your OP that says ,"I'm pretty sure it's dead". Were you sure before it went in the freezer?

Depending how long it's been in the freezer, I'm pretty sure you're right.

Sadly, quite a lot of barn owls get clobbered on roads, so most taxidermists will have plenty in their freezers.

There is a gent at Lancaster University who collects up road kill raptors to monitor levels of pesticide contamination in them and the like. PM me for his contact details - he's particuarly keen to get barn owls.

You should make a note in writing as soon as possible of the details of where and when you found it and the circumstances.

Failing that, bin it or bury it.
