I was under the impression that the term isotonic referred to the concentration of salts being similar to those of blood/sweat - and not related to calories at all - not so ?

Nope, isotonic drinks have sugars as well as the electrolytes.

Isotonic: similar levels of salt and sugar to the human body.

Hypertonic: higher concentration of salt and sugar than the human body.

Hypotonic: Lower concentration of salt/sugar than the human body.
