I'm just discovering isotonic drinks (actually fizzy supplements to make isotonic drinks when added to water) and think I detect better immunity to cramping and less outrageous quaffing in the hours after a ride - but have only tried a couple of varieties.

I had a couple of citrus High 5 Zeros and a High 5 Extreme (with Caffeine) free with a mag - I liked them (but I'm still getting the smell out of the bottle from the caffeine one!)

I happened to see the SiS equivalent in a local shop, so thought "bet they're basically identical" - but so far they're not sitting as well in my gut, and taste distinctly salty/synthetic by comparison - the benefits still seem to be there though.

Obviously I'll probably avoid buying any more of those, but are there any others people particularly recommend / avoid ?

I suspect it'll turn out to be another "every possible product on the market" thread - but you never know ...

The SIS tabs with caffeine don't make your bottles smell as bad as the High 5 extreme, which make you bottles smell like Redbullxx(

Try making your own: Mix pure fruit juice, water and a pinch of salt. Alter the ratio of juice to water dependent on whether you're after more hydration 1:3 juice : water,

isotonic 1:1

or more of an energy boost 3:1 juice : water.

Beer has featured rather heavily in my past, but not my present or future... ;)
Cheers though!

And though I like the DIY concept - it's going to contain quite a bit of sugar - I get that from bars/cake and just-about know how much I need. I just want to replace minerals lost in sweating - (very) dilute saline would probably be fine, but I'm not averse to a hint of citrus or similar, and perhaps additional electrolytes not found in table salt.

Agreed - there's little point for short rides - It's mainly for Sunday runs (3-4 hours, 30-60-odd miles).

On a whim I popped into a shop yesterday and asked if they had any High 5 stuff - the guy said "No, but we've got SiS..."
So I tell him my guts don't like it, and he tells me he has the same problem!

Anyway - I took the only other offering they had - ZipVit ZV0 which tastes OK (Cherry-ish) and doesn't seem as upsetting as the SiS stuff - I'll find out for sure on Sunday...

Otherwise I'll just get a good stock of Zero in - life's too short!

I never used to bother, but after my first 'episode' last year my physio recommended that I make sure 1 of my bottles had an electrolyte drink in it, every ride. Have done ever since, always SIS Cherry (ish) flavour, works ok for me guts wise. Does it help/benefit, no idea. Been hospitalised again twice so it certainly hasn't helped that!!

I did 200miles averaged 18.3mph on water coke and caramel waffle.

Save your money and buy some more expensive bib shorts.

I only like the pink grapefruit high 5. I have had all sorts of freebies, I don't like most and they are in the cupboard. @RebornBumbler if you PM me your address, I'll pop them all in the post (I don't think they have a use by date?)
