Yes, I was forgetting about Brexit. Another friend who owns property in Normandy has been bemoaning the additional hassles introduced by that.

they buy it, you pay for a local to manage it

that's ethical 😀

I suppose I should have added 'or cost' to the end òf my post above.

Lol I thought the OP by ethical meant the fact that the daughter and husband are living rent free (on the taxpayer, so to speak, I know it's not correct because it's part of the army wages) while getting her mortgage paid by renters.
I don't have an opinion on that scenario but I have one on buying a property abroad to rent out: do not do it!
Renting out is hassle when you live near the rental, if the rental is abroad the stress would be immense!
Then factor in Brexit with new property rules, limited stay, etc.
Property maintenance people trying to fleece you, local bureaucracy.
Not worth it imo.
Your poor daughter, I feel for her if you convince her

I thought the ethical question Webbo posed was that they would try to convince the daughter to buy a house in Italy solely so that Webbo and his wife could use it.

Wise advice.

I bought my French place pre-Brexit, and the best thing I've ever done - despite Brexit.

But...

I don't rent it out - it's very much my (other) home. So I've not got worries of people turning up and something not working. I've also got brilliant neighbours, but they've never had to do anything, as I just turn everything off, close the shutters, and mothball it till my next visit. The mairie is also super-helpful.

All that said... would I still buy post Brexit? Probably not, with all the uncertainty. Original thought was to spend maybe 5-10 years mostly in France, but not really practical now. Still if I get up to 90/180 days there, I won't complain, and if needs be there is the 12-month carte de séjour option.

But buying a foreign property is probably not a decision to be made while tipsy.
